Mud Mayhem

Stuck in the Mud

Happy Wednesday, it’s Susan!

I really wanted to kick off our new blog with an amazing shine product, but the weather and constant rain is forcing me to turn my sights and attention to the current NC situation: Mud Mayhem.

3 year old Scarlett enjoying her mud bath

As the turnouts get wetter and wetter, there is that moment as your horse approaches the fence that you rethink your decision to ride. Every square inch of their sheet is crusted over and the exposed parts of their bodies are caked in layers of mud. You then realize that the quick hack you were going to have is going to turn into a very long groom session, or worse, you are going to be late getting on for your lesson.

So what do you do as you grab those nasty clasps to remove their sheet and it becomes clear that your horse needs a bath, but the temperature and schedule may not allow for that luxury? You thank the mud Gods for two products in your grooming kit: Epona Tiger’s Tongue and HAAS Mustang Brush.

Epona Tiger’s Tongue

Sensitive skin? Not an issue here! I have not put this sponge on a single horse at the barn that has objected to having its face or underbelly scrubbed. This sponge is lightweight, easy to clean, and travels with us EVERYWHERE due to all of its uses. For now, let’s stick with the mud. Start off your grooming session by using the Tiger Sponge all over your horse, almost as a curry alternative; it TRULY starts loosening the clumps of dried mud. I buy these constantly because, when you consider the price tag of $6.00, you really cannot go wrong. I like to restock my Tiger Sponge at The Tack Room.

HAAS Mustang Brush

I then take the HAAS Mustang Wire Brush to the body. All of the HAAS brushes are a great investment; some of our brushes are 3-4 years old and are in pristine condition. I would not recommend the HAAS Mustang for the face, but it works wonders on the legs and hindquarters especially given the gross time of year. I picked up the brush at SmartPak!

I take my daughter out to the barn 5 times a week and she is coming from high school, so I have tried to discover the quick and effective tools that help her get tacked up before nightfall. I want to give a little hope to all horse owners that look at the weather forecast and dread going out to the barn. Hang on tight! With the Epona Tiger’s Tongue and the HAAS Mustang Wire Brush, we can make it to dryer pastures.

We would love to hear your feedback if you tried these products! Feel free to drop a comment below. You can also follow us along on Instagram where we will (try) to post videos of how we use all the products we talk about. Have a great week!
